Breve estratto del testo: “There were a number of people out this afternoon, far more than last Sunday. And the band sounded louder and gayer. That was because the Season had begun. For although the band played all the year round on Sundays, out of season it was never the same. It was like some one playing with only the family to listen; it didn’t care how it played if there weren’t any strangers present. Wasn’t the conductor wearing a new coat, too? She was sure it was new. He scraped with his foot and flapped his arms like a rooster about to crow, and the bandsmen sitting in the green rotunda blew out their cheeks and glared at the music. Now there came a little “flutey” bit–very pretty!–a little chain of bright drops. She was sure it would be repeated. It was; she lifted her head and smiled…”

Franca Cavagnoli, narratrice, saggista, traduttrice di grandi scrittori contemporanei quali J.M. Coetzee, Nadine Gordimer, Katherine Mansfield, Toni Morrison, V.S. Naipaul, e altri. Attivissima come formatrice di nuovi e egregi traduttori. Ha scritto un saggio di fondamentale rilievo sull’arte e il mestiere della traduzione, La voce del testo (Feltrinelli, 2012) sulla traduzione come esperienza e, indirettamente, sulla traduzione come necessità vitale nell’epoca della globalizzazione e dell’incontro obbligato tra i cittadini del mondo. Un “manuale” di quelli più necessari a affrontare il presente. Ha pubblicato i romanzi Una pioggia bruciante (Frassinelli, 2000), Non si è seri a 17 anni (Frassinelli, 2007), Mbaqanga (Feltrinelli, 2013); il saggio Il proprio e l’estraneo nella traduzione letteraria di lingua inglese (Polimetrica 2010). Suoi articoli sono apparsi su Linea d’ombra, Diario, Corriere della Sera e il manifesto. Insegna traduzione presso le Università di Milano e di Pisa. Nel 2010 ha vinto il premio Fedrigoni per la traduzione letteraria; per I Classici Feltrinelli ha curato la nuova traduzione del romanzo Il grande Gatsby di F.S. Fitzgerald (Premio Von Rezzori per la traduzione letteraria 2011). Ha ricevuto il Premio Lo Straniero 2013.
