“El Ojo de Polisemo”, Granada (15-17/05)

From 15-17 May 2014 ACE Traductores, the Spanish Association of Literary
Translators, will hold its sixth annual conference, ‘El ojo de Polisemo’.
The conference, organised in collaboration with the Faculty of Translation
and Interpreting, will take place in Granada and is open to students,
teachers and literary translation professionals. This year’s topic will be
‘Ambassadors of the Unknown: Translation of less translated languages’.

London Review Bookshop Masterclasses

The last of this season’s Translation Masterclasses will be held this April.

On Monday nights we open the floor to translators working in any language.
Starting on Monday 7 April, the award-winning translator Sarah Ardizzone
will give a session on translating sharp dialogue. On Monday 14 April, Sarah
is back to guide you through the challenges and rewards of translating for
children. And finally on 28 April, Daniel Hahn will tackle the trick of
translating wordplay. All three sessions run from 6.30-9.30 p.m. at the
London Review of Books offices in Bloomsbury.

The Future of Culture, the Future of Europe
4-5 April 2014

The French Ministry of Culture and Communication organizes on the 4th and
5th of April at the Palais de Chaillot in Paris a Forum entitled “Future of
Culture, Future of Europe”.
For this occasion, one day and a half of debates on the future of cultural
policies in Europe will be held, along with a meeting of the European
ministers of culture at the initiative of the French Minister.
Following the discussions concerning the cultural exception that have marked
the European debate, this meeting should strengthen the importance of
culture and its essential role at the European level, specifically regarding

Summer School Summit 2014

Our first Summer School Summit will take place 14-18 July at the University
of East Anglia.

We welcome Expressions of Interest from experienced literary translators
from the UK and around the world who are interested in translation workshops
and teaching methodologies.

This residential professional development programme will offer the
opportunity for experienced literary translators who have run workshops or
taught translation to exchange ideas and experience, exploring different
ideas and techniques and learning from each other.

The costs of accommodation, subsistence and UK travel will be covered for
all participants

‘Literary Translation and Resources for Literary Translators’, Granada (March-May)

Under the title ‘Literary Translation and Resources for Literary
Translators’ the Spanish Association of Literary Translators, ACE
Traductores, is organising an introductory programme. The course will be
held in Granada, and comprises the following workshops and seminars:

Introduction to Literary Translation (16 hours, March 2014) by Carmen
Montes Cano
Documentary Research for Translators (6 hours, April 2014) by Alicia
Martorell
Computer Resources for Translators (8 hours, May 2014) by Robert Falcó and
Carlos Mayor

Translation masterclasses, London (March-April)

TRANSLATION MASTERCLASSES

London Review Bookshop Masterclasses

The London Review Bookshop is continuing its successful 2013-14 season of
translation masterclasses with leading literary translators, run in
association with the British Centre of Literary Translation. There are still
spaces available for masterclasses in March and April.

We are offering Saturday masterclass sessions working from French and German
into English. All the masterclasses will cover a range of topics, including
colloquial language, slang, voice, style and punctuation.

Monday evenings will be open to translators working out of any language into
English. These masterclasses will explore particular translation challenges
that translators face when working with any language; ways of tackling puns
and word play, how to convey a writer’s use of non-standard language without
it sounding simply wrong, dealing with dialogue and colloquial speech, and

broadcasters to ensure that those who have created or invested in the
creation can receive remuneration for it, have significant economic and
social importance. As such, the European Commission aims to ensure that
copyright and copyright-related practices, such as licensing, remain fit for
purpose in the current digital age. As part of its on-going efforts to
review and modernise EU copyright rules, the European Commission has
launched a public consultation inviting stakeholders to share their views on

China International Translation Contest 2013, Beijing (28th Feb, 2014)

China International Translation Contest 2013 (CITC 2013) was launched in
Beijing on September2. 2013. It is co-hosted by the State Council
Information Office, the Chinese Writers Association and the China
International Publishing Group (CIPG), with the Translators Association of
China being one of its organizers.

This is the first translation contest in China that targets at translators
both home and abroad. It is sponsored by The Chinese Writers Association;
China International Publishing Group (CIPG); Translators Association of
China.

The CITC 2013 organizing committee has provided 30 pieces of contemporary
Chinese short stories as source texts, and the participants can choose one
or more of the stories to translate into one of the five (English, French,
